Rattlers Set for Champions Clash in Vegas

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It does not get much bigger this early in the season.
The Arizona Rattlers will travel to Nevada this Sunday for a matchup with the Vegas Knight Hawks as the last two Indoor Football League champions meet in a battle for the top spot in the Western Conference. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. MST at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nev. The game will be broadcast on Yahoo! Sports.
Both teams enter the matchup at 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, setting the stage for an even matchup between two of the league's premier franchises.
The Rattlers come in riding the momentum of a 64-63 victory over Tulsa, a game that showcased both their offensive firepower and ability to execute in key moments. Quarterback Max Meylor delivered his best performance of the season, throwing for 215 yards and five touchdowns.
"I thought we did an excellent job in situational football at the end of the first half and the second half," Head Coach Kevin Guy said. "It's why we won the game."
The Rattlers' offense continues to trend upward, totaling a season-high 320 yards last week. Arizona has now rushed for over 100 yards in three consecutive games and enters the week averaging 95.6 rushing yards per game.
Sunday's matchup also features a rematch of last season's championship quarterback duel. Knight Hawks quarterback Jayden DeLaura led Vegas to its first title, defeating Meylor and the Green Bay Blizzard. Now, Meylor looks to flip the script in a Rattlers uniform.
The two teams split their meetings in 2025, with each side protecting its home field. Arizona claimed a narrow 50-47 victory at Desert Diamond Arena before falling 52-37 in Nevada two weeks later.
For Guy, the focus remains on continued growth, particularly with a roster that is still developing chemistry on both sides of the ball.
"I'd rather learn while we're winning than learn while we're losing," Guy said. "We found a way to win, and I think that says something about the character of our team and the mental toughness to close games out."
Defensively, the Rattlers will face another tough test against a Knight Hawks team that has proven it can score. Vegas leads the league in scoring average with 52.6 points per game. On the other hand, the Rattlers lead the league in total offense averaging 273.2 yards per game.
Arizona's young defense will tested, but has shown flashes and continues to gain experience week by week.
As the season approaches its midpoint, Sunday's contest offers more than just standings implications; it is an opportunity for the Rattlers to prove themselves against the league's best on the road. One team will emerge with a tie-breaker advantage over the other.
And in a matchup featuring two championship-caliber teams, Guy expects nothing less than another battle that comes down to the final moments.
