Biography:
PROFESSIONAL Rufus Brown is entering his second season in the AFL, his first with the Rattlers. Rufus spent the second half of 2007 with the Las Vegas Gladiators, leading the team with two forced fumbles, finishing fourth on the team with 37 tackles, and adding two pass breakups. Before joining the Gladiators, he started the season with the New York Dragons, making 5 tackles and returning two kickoffs for 29 yards (14.5 average). He was signed by the San Jose Sabercats on November 8, 2005, but spent the entire 2006 season on injured reserve. Originally signed out of college as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins in 2004, he mostly played on the scout team. He made his NFL debut in 2005 but was allocated to the Hamburg Sea Devils, for whom he recorded 17 tackles and an interception.
COLLEGE Brown played in 50 games during his four-year career with the Florida State Seminoles. He totaled 100 tackles and helped lead his teams to the 2001 Orange Bowl, the 2002 Gator Bowl and the 2003 Sugar Bowl. His best season came as a junior when he was the only Seminole defensive back to start all 14 games and had career-highs for tackles for loss, forced fumbles, interceptions and pass break-ups. Brown was also ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in three categories.
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL Rufus was born on July 18, 1980 in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Austin High School from 1994-1998. He was a high school option quarterback and was an all-district selection at quarterback. Also played safety and cornerback at Austin High School. Named PrepStar's No. 6 athlete in the country and No. 2 in the Big 12 region. Brown was the No. 71 player in the nation according to the National Recruiting Advisor and Tom Lemming's No. 62 prospect in the Southwest. Ran a 4.42 in the 40-yard dash out of high school. He was a regional qualifier in the long jump for the track team as a senior. Chose Florida State University over Texas and Arizona. Brown graduated college with a degree in Information Management Systems and is currently working on a degree in Construction Management in Florida. He is also currently serving in the construction engineer program for Mapp Construction in Orlando.
