Phoenix, Ariz. – The Arizona Rattlers will host the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles this Saturday at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix. Arizona will be looking to extend their win streak to four games.
With a win last week against their long-time rival the Spokane Empire, the Rattlers have taken over first place in the Intense Conference, and have put themselves in good position to obtain home field advantage in the playoffs. Arizona plays Spokane one more time this season, and with just five games total left in the regular season, they control their own destiny on their road to winning the Intense Conference.
The last time Arizona played the Screaming Eagles was at Salt Lake on April 14. The Rattlers came away with a 73-60 victory with a major showing from the offense. Running back Darrell Monroe ran for 80 yards on 14 attempts, averaging 5.7 yards per rush while scoring five touchdowns in the win. Rattlers quarterback Cody Sokol went six-of-ten and threw for 102 yards and one touchdown. Screaming Eagles quarterback Verlon Reed completed 20-of-32 for 162 yards with four touchdowns, and two interceptions.
In last week’s win against Spokane, quarterback Cody Sokol threw for 80 yards and three touchdowns. Monroe also scored three touchdowns while rushing for 109 yards. The Rattlers are ranked second in total offense and rushing in the Indoor Football League (IFL).
Defensively, the Rattlers had a good showing against the Empire, recording six sacks against Spokane quarterback Charles Dowdell. Arizona is ranked fourth in defense against the pass, recording eight interceptions on the season. Arkeith Brown and Allen Chapman both lead the team in interceptions with four apiece. Linebacker Adam Sauder leads the team in tackles with 61.5.
On special teams, kicker Sawyer Petre is ranked second in field goal percentage and first in PAT percentage. Wide receiver and main return man Jamal Miles is ranked second in yards and is tied for first in kickoff return touchdowns.
Salt Lake enters this game following a 38-37 victory over the Colorado Crush (2-9). Their quarterback Verlon Reed threw three touchdowns and one interception, while going 18-for-31, accounting for 175 total yards. The Screaming Eagles are ranked sixth in scoring, and fourth in total offense.
On defense, their leader in tackles is cornerback Ed Burns with 36.5. The two players tied for most interceptions are cornerback Don Unamba and defensive back James Calhoun with four each. Leading the Screaming Eagles in sacks is Jerome McElroy with three. Salt Lake is ranked fourth in total defense and eighth against the rush.
Screaming Eagles player Cyrus Strahm is not only the team’s kicker, he is also their second best wide receiver, who averages 11 yards every time he catches the ball. Their main returner is wide receiver Juwan Dotson. He is in the top five in return yards and touchdowns among kick returners in the IFL.
