Phoenix, AZ – NICK DAVILA Vs. AARON GARCIA, Round 2! This game featured the starting Quarterbacks from 2011 Arena Bowl, which was played in this very building, US Airways Center, back in August. DAVILA brought in the Arizona Rattlers league leading passing offense into a showdown against the league’s number four passing defense of the San Antonio Talons. The fireworks went off with 6,835 people in attendance, and it was game on.
DAVILA came out slinging it. Going 2-for-5 on the opening drive, hitting league leading WR MAURICE PURIFY both times for a total of 45 yards and a TD. The same could not be said for GARCIA. He went 2-for-5, for a total of 12 yards, but that drive was plagued by a few miscues, and ended with an interception by Rattlers DB ARKEITH BROWN. Rattlers took over on their own 3-yard line, and it was only a matter of time until DAVILA lit up the scoreboard up once again. He hit WR KERRY REED for an 11 yard TD, with under 2 minutes left in the first. The quarter would come to an end with the Rattlers up 13-0.
GARCIA and the Talons would attempt to answer back in the second quarter, but failed to do so on their first possession. Rattlers DB BROWN had a huge 3rd down pass deflection, and GARCIA over threw it on 4th down, the Rattlers would take over at their own 14. Once again it was only a matter of time until DAVILA found REED again in the end zone for a 19-yard strike. With just under eight minutes left in the 2nd quarter, GARCIA would finally put the Talons on the board, by hitting WR ROBERT QUIROGA for 12-yard TD. The ensuing Rattlers drive would knock about 5 minutes off the clock, and end with another TD from DAVILA to PURIFY, bringing the score to 26-7. The Rattlers defense would again force a turnover, LB TYRE GLASPER would get the Sack and Fumble recovery, and the Rattlers would take over at the Talons 9-yard line. DAVILA would try to make it 5 TD’s in the first half, but instead threw an interception with 2 seconds left. The score would remain 26-7 going into halftime.
The Talons would start the 3rd quarter from their own 8-yard line, and quickly try to put some points on the board. GARCIA would find WR DERRICK LEE for his 2nd TD of the afternoon. The Rattlers would quickly answer back; FB ODIE ARMSTRONG would put in the end zone from 1-yard out. The Rattlers Defense would play lights out on the next drive. On 4th down, GLASPER would force a fumble, and DL MARCUS PITTMAN would pick it up and run it in for a TD, bringing the score to 40-14. The Talons would get the ball back, but the Rattlers defense wouldn’t allow anything, forcing them to turn it over own downs to end the 3rd.
The Rattlers would start on the Talons side of the field to begin the 4th quarter, and a few plays later ARMSTRONG would rumble in from 12 yards out for his 2nd TD of the night. Rattlers K CHRIS GOULD would bounce one off the net, and DB DWIGHT MCCLEAN would recover at the Talons 6-yard line. QB JASON MURRIETTA would fill in for DAVILA and toss his first two TD’s of the season to REED and PURIFY. GARCIA would add three more of his own as well, but it is too little to late. PURIFY would also return an onside kick for a TD.
DAVILA would end his aerial assault early, going 14-for-26, 203 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 Int, in just three quarter. GARCIA and the Talons would come out on the losing end of this match, thanks to the Rattlers defense and special teams forcing turnovers and scoring TD’s. League leading receiver MAURICE PURIFY would add to his numbers, hauling in 9 receptions for 132 yards and 3 TD’s. KERRY REED also had 6 receptions for 65 yards, and 3 TD’s. DAVILA and the Arizona Rattlers came to play today. The Showdown in the Snake Pit was everything Rattlers fans wanted and needed! The Rattlers will take their show on the road next week when they face the Georgia Force.
