Phoenix, Ariz. – The Arizona Rattlers announced Wednesday that they have signed defensive backs James Ackel and Josh Atkinson for the 2017 season in the Indoor Football League (IFL).
Ackel (6-0, 210, Adams State) has made himself known in the IFL as one of the best defensive backs, earning First Team All-IFL honors in 2015. Prior to joining the IFL, Ackel joined the National Football League’s (NFL) Indianapolis Colts in 2013.
Ackel attended Adams State University where he was a three-time All-RMAC First Team member, and led his conference in solo tackles with 55 in his senior season. The Riverside, California native was also named RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year honors in 2009.
Atkinson (6-0, 190, Azusa Pacific) attended Notre Dame for the first three years of his NCAA career. While there, he played in 26 games, which included the 2012 BCS National Championship game. Atkinson also ran track for the Irish, including the 100 meter dash and the 4×100 relay. Atkinson transferred from Notre Dame to Azusa Pacific University for his senior season, and played in the 2016 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl after having a career year with 36 tackles and seven pass breakups.
The Stockton, California native attended Granada High School, where he was named the second-team all-East Bay Athletic League as defensive back in 2010, and was selected for Team USA vs. The World all-star game in Austin, Texas. Atkinson is the son of the NFL’s Oakland Raider George Atkinson.
