Phoenix, Ariz. – The world champion Arizona Rattlers announced Thursday that they have signed quarterback Verlon Reed as the team begins to prepare to defend their title in the Indoor Football League (IFL).
“I am very excited to be joining [the Rattlers],” Reed said when asked about signing with Arizona. “I am looking forward to coming into this organization and competing at my position and helping the team win.”
Reed spent the 2017 season with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles. While there, he completed 274 of 463 passes for 2,734 yards and 54 touchdowns. He was also the league leading rusher, running for 759 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also earned the 2017 IFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. In 2015, Reed was invited to the NFL’s Detroit Lions Rookie Minicamp.
“Our philosophy is that we want competition at every position. Competition breeds success,” said General Manager and Head Coach Kevin Guy. “Verlon had a great first year. Coaching against him, he was one of the more dynamic players that we went up against at his position. He can attack defenses with both his arm and his feet.”
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder began his collegiate career at Ohio State where he played wide receiver. After his sophomore year, he transferred to the University of Findlay where he made the switch to quarterback. In his junior with the Oilers, Reed threw for a team-high 1,791 yards, completing 128 of his 190 passing attempts, and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for 389 yards, averaged 5.8 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns on the ground, and was named honorable mention all-GLIAC. In his final season, Reed broke the school record by throwing for 2,712 yards and 22 touchdowns, 634 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. His efforts made him a Harlon Hill regional finalist, which is the Heisman Trophy for Division II athletics.
The Columbus, Ohio was a multi-sport athlete at Marion-Franklin High School. He earned all-city, all-district, all-metro and all-state honors after passing for 1,714 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushing for another 1,658 yards in his senior season. He also helped lead Marion-Franklin to the state semifinals. Reed also played basketball and ran track for Marion-Franklin.
