In a span of three weeks, two of the Valley’s most popular sports teams – the Arizona Rattlers and Phoenix Mercury — came home with championship trophies.
The best teams in the Arena Football League and WNBA were recognized by the Arizona Diamondbacks during Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field in Phoenix. At the end of the first inning, Rattlers owner Ron Shurts and general manager/head coach Kevin Guy, along with Mercury general manager Jim Pitman and head coach Sandy Brondello, took the field and received an ovation from the crowd.
The Rattlers became only the second team in AFL history to win a third consecutive championship with a 72-32 victory Aug. 23 over the Cleveland Gladiators in ArenaBowl XXVII. The Mercury won a third title Saturday with an 87-82 win to complete a three-game sweep of the Chicago Sky.
