Philadelphia, Pa. – The five time World Champion Arizona Rattlers (5-2) dropped their second game of the season against the Philadelphia Soul (6-1) by a score of 65-58 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in front of 8,505 fans.
Despite the loss, two Rattlers players reached major career milestones Saturday night. Arizona’s all-time receptions leader, wide receiver Rod Windsor surpassed 10,000 receiving yards in his career. Quarterback Nick Davila reached two plateaus, surpassing 30,000 career passing yards and 700 career passing touchdowns.
Both Davila and Windsor had big nights statistically. Davila completed 26 of 42 passes for 316 yards and 8 touchdowns, while Windsor had 153 receiving yards and two touchdowns. This was not enough however, as the Rattlers dropped their second straight game.
The last time the Rattlers lost two straight games was at the end of the 2014 season. That year Arizona would go on to win ArenaBowl XXVII.
The Soul jumped to an early lead over the Rattlers with a two-play drive that ended in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Philadelphia quarterback Dan Raudabaugh to wide receiver Darius Reynolds. Then, after a fumble by Rattlers fullback Mykel Benson, the Soul again scored from a four-yard rush by wide receiver Shaun Kauleinamoku to put Philadelphia up 14-0. Arizona was finally able to get on the scoreboard late in the first quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Davila to wide receiver Maurice Purify.
Philadelphia quickly responded in the second quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Raudabaugh to Kauleinamoku. On the ensuing drive, Arizona took the ball down to the Soul five-yard line, but failed to punch it in. The Soul would then take the ball down to Arizona’s six-yard line, but opted to kick the field goal, extending their lead to 17.
After the two teams traded touchdowns, Arizona would close the gap with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Davila to Purify. Arizona trailed Philadelphia at the half by a score of 31-21.
The Rattlers received the ball in the second half and took advantage, scoring on a six-play drive that was capped off with a five-yard touchdown pass from Davila to Purify.
After the kickoff, Philadelphia would score on the next play with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Raudabaugh to Kauleinamoku.
The Rattlers would respond with a screen pass from Davila to fullback Mykel Benson, to once again pull within three. This pass pushed Davila to 700 touchdown passes in his career.
At this point, Philadelphia’s special teams took over. Arizona attempted an on-side kick, but defensive end Jeramie Richardson scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown. The very next kickoff, linebacker Joe Goosby had a big hit on wide receiver Anthony Amos forcing him to fumble. The ball was recovered by defensive back Tracy Belton, who earned the Riddell Defensive Player of the Game award. The Soul would take advantage with a four-yard rush from Richardson, which pushed the Soul lead to 16.
The fourth quarter was a cat and mouse game, where the Rattlers would score, but the Soul would respond, and with the help of two successful two-point conversions the Rattlers would close the gap, but it was not enough to make up the deficit, losing by 7.
The Rattlers return home next Saturday, May 21st when they face the LA KISS (3-3). The KISS are coming off their bye week. The matchup will take place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena at 6:00 p.m. PDT, and will be televised on FOX Sports Arizona Plus, or streamed online at ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app on a tablet, smartphone, or streaming device.
