GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The six-time world champion league leading Arizona Rattlers (9-1) defeated the Green Bay Blizzard (1-8) by a score of 62-26 at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Rattlers have extended their current win streak to eight.
Saturday’s win was General Manager and Head Coach Kevin Guy’s 141st win as the Arizona Rattlers head coach, which tied former head coach Danny White as the winningest head coach in team history.
Arizona’s defense came up big on Saturday, only allowing 13 in each half. Rattlers secondary pulled in three interceptions, Arkeith Brown, Allen Chapman and Dillion Winfrey each with one apiece. Linebacker Justin Shirk had 14 tackles, and 2.5 sacks.
Quarterback Jeff Ziemba went 11-13 for 111 yards and five touchdowns. WR Dezmon Epps caught two of the touchdowns and added a third on a 57-yard kickoff return
For Green Bay, QB Bryan Hicks got the start, but after throwing two interceptions in consecutive possessions, he was replaced by QB Tyler Johnson who completed four of his seven passes for 24 yards and an interception. Hicks would return in the fourth and completed the game going 4-of-11 for 36 yards and two touchdowns.
The Rattlers took a big lead early, scoring on four straight possessions. The first was a three-yard run from Ziemba. The next three were all completions from Ziemba, the first an eight-yarder to WR Anthony Jones Jr., the second a four-yard pass to Monroe, the third was a six-yard pass to WR Jamal Miles, and the Rattlers led 28-0 early in the second.
The Blizzard were finally able to get on the board off of a two-yard run by QB Tyler Johnson. After a four-and-out by the Rattlers, Green Bay kicker Jeff Budzien made a 29-yard field goal to make it 28-10.
Dezmon Epps returned the ensuing kickoff for the Rattlers 57-yards to make it 35-10.
The Blizzard closed out the half with another field goal by Budzien and the Rattlers would go into halftime with a 22-point lead.
Arizona got on the board quickly in the second half from a 47-yard pass from Ziemba to WR Dezmon Epps.
Green Bay responded with a five-yard touchdown run from Johnson.
The Rattlers would again extend their lead from a four-yard touchdown pass by Ziemba to Miles.
Arizona would bring in QB Verlon Reed who completed an 18-yard pass to Epps, and the Rattlers would lead 55-20. Reed threw his second touchdown late in the fourth to WR Anthony Amos, a 14-yard strike, pushing their lead to 42.
The Blizzard would score once more as time expired, a six-yard run by BJ Hill, and the Rattlers would win 62-26.
The Rattlers will return home next Sunday, May 20th to face the second place Iowa Barnstormers (7-2). The Barnstormers are coming off of a 48-21 win over the Cedar Rapids Titans (1-9) Friday night. The game will kick off at 3:05 p.m. PDT at Talking Stick Resort Arena, and will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona, streamed on YouTube Live and the Fox Sports GO app, and can be heard on 1580 The Fanatic 99.3 FM and 95.9 FM.
