Kevin Guy and the Rattlers are committed to trying to bring back another ArenaBowl championship after the coach and general manager signed on for two more seasons.
A year after leading the Rattlers to within a play of the Arena Football League championship, Guy guided the Rattlers to the championship this past season, beating the Philadelphia Soul 72-54 in ArenaBowl XXV in New Orleans.
“I felt like we’ve got something special going on here,” said Guy, before getting ready to go into a shark tank off Maui on Tuesday during a vacation. “The people are the ones who make the organization and I enjoy working with them. It seems like everyone is committed to the process and what we’re trying to do.”
Guy instantly hit it off with new majority partner Ron Shurts during the 2011 season when Shurts took over controls of the franchise. Shurts is a former Rattlers season ticket holder, a football guy, who has spent a lot of resources into year-round marketing.
“He’s been able to provide you with the things you need to give you a chance to be successful,” Guy said. “I think Ron Shurts is a big reason we win. We see eye-to-eye on things. We understand what kind of people we’re looking for in this organization. Character is a big part of what we’re doing, being involved in the community on and off the field.”
When Guy gets back from vacation, he’ll go to work next week trying to re-sign Rattlers players. Next week begins a two-week period for teams to re-sign their own players, before they become free agents.
“I’ve not had a player tell me they’re not coming back,” Guy said. “I’m excited about the future and taking on the challenge of what’s in front of us. We’re trying to win two in a row.
“We’re always going to try to get better as a football team. Our players will continued to get better or we’ll bring in people who will help us. It’s still a business. Everyone on last year’s team will have a chance to come back and repeat.”
