Phoenix, Ariz. -It is rare for a game this early in the season to have playoff implications, but Saturday’s game between the Arizona Rattlers (4-1) and the San Jose SaberCats (5-0) has just that.
The Rattlers are coming off a big win against their Western Division foe, the Los Angeles KISS (0-5), defeating them by a score of 68-30.
Arizona was firing on all cylinders Saturday night. Offensively, the Rattlers scored a touchdown all but two of their posessions. Rattlers quarterback Nick Davila threw 7 of those touchdowns and threw for 232 total yards. Davila did leave the game early in the 4th quarter, and has been placed on injured reserve.
Defensively, the Rattlers were equally as impressive, holding the KISS to only 30 points, while recording 4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions.
Even with Davila out, the Rattlers are still in great shape for Saturday’s game at the quarterback position with the strong arm of quarterback BJ Coleman. “BJ Coleman has been working hard for this opportunity,” head coach and general manager Kevin Guy said. “We are extremely confident in him and his ability.”
San Jose is coming off a big division win of their own, knocking off the Portland Thunder(2-3) to stay unbeaten on the season. The SaberCats are led by Erik Meyer who leads the league in yards per completion (minimum 100 attempts) with an average of 13.1 yards.
Saturday will be the first of two regular season games where the Rattlers and the SaberCats will meet. Their last meeting was the 2014 Conference finals, where Arizona knocked off San Jose by a score of 72-56.
The Rattlers return home to face the SaberCats at the US Airways Center this Saturday, May 2nd at 6:00 pm. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2. For additional information please visit www.azrattlers.com.
